Russia Poised to Acquire Ballistic Missiles from Iran Amidst Escalating Ukraine Conflict
Russia is reportedly progressing in its negotiations to purchase ballistic missiles from Iran, signaling a potential escalation in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. According to a US official who recently revealed declassified intelligence, Russia's intent to acquire close-range ballistic missiles from Iran is “actively advancing.” This development underlines the increasing collaboration between Moscow and Tehran, as Russia intensifies its missile attacks across Ukraine.
The official highlighted a notable meeting in Iran back in September, where Iranian military officials from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps showcased their Ababil close-range ballistic missile and other missile systems to Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu. This event marked the first public display of ballistic missiles to a senior Russian official visiting Iran since the Russia-Ukraine war began.
Further, in mid-December, the IRGC presented ballistic missiles and missile support systems at a training area in Iran for a Russian delegation, further suggesting Russia's plans to purchase these systems.
The potential arms deal occurs as the US finds itself temporarily unable to provide further aid to Ukraine due to a funding lapse, pending Congress's approval of an emergency supplemental request. Concurrently, Russia has escalated its missile barrages on Ukrainian targets and continues to foster its defense partnership with Iran.
Iran's support for Russia in the conflict has already been significant, including the provision of hundreds of drones used by Russian forces. Moreover, Russia is constructing a drone-manufacturing facility in Iran, which could substantially impact the war in Ukraine upon completion.
The prospect of Russia acquiring ballistic missiles from Iran has been a source of concern for US officials for several months, as it represents a significant increase in Iran’s support for Russia in the Ukraine conflict.
Addressing these developments, NSC Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby confirmed that Russia and Iran appear close to finalizing the missile deal. Kirby also revealed that North Korea has begun supplying Russia with missiles and launchers, further demonstrating Russia's growing reliance on like-minded states for military equipment.
In response, the United States plans to raise the issue at the UN Security Council, highlighting that Russia’s procurement of ballistic missiles from North Korea directly violates multiple UN Security Council resolutions. Additionally, the US intends to impose sanctions against those facilitating arms transfers between Russia and North Korea, as well as between Russia and Iran.
Kirby emphasized the urgent need for Congress to act, to ensure continued US support of Ukraine in the face of these escalating developments. The situation underscores the complex international dynamics at play in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, with Russia seeking support from Iran and North Korea as it faces global isolation.
