Pizza Shop Attack
Off-Duty Deputy Killed at Pizza Shop Attack, Suspect Taken into Custody
The suspect, identified as 44-year-old Ronnie Palmer, was taken into custody following an intensive manhunt.
HOUSTON, TX – In a tragic sequence of events, the Harris County Sheriff's Office has apprehended a person of interest in connection with the killing of an off-duty deputy and an aggravated assault incident at a local pizza shop. The suspect, identified as 44-year-old Ronnie Palmer, was taken into custody following an intensive manhunt.
The incident began on Wednesday night at a Little Caesars pizza shop on Wallisville Road. According to Chief Deputy Mike Lee, Palmer entered the establishment to pick up a pizza order but became irate when he discovered the order was incorrect. Palmer allegedly verbally assaulted the employee, then escalated the situation by producing a firearm and pistol-whipping the worker before fleeing the scene.
The employee was able to provide a detailed description of Palmer's getaway vehicle, including the make, model, color, and license plate. This information was crucial in tracking down the suspect. Harris County deputies quickly entered the vehicle's details into the county's Flock camera system, which led them to the 13200 block of Italian Cypress Trail.
Deputy Fernando Esqueda, a five-year veteran of the Harris County Sheriff's Office and a member of the Violent Persons Task Force, was among the detectives working overtime to maintain order in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl. Esqueda spotted the suspect's vehicle and notified his team members over the phone. During this conversation, Esqueda was ambushed and shot multiple times.
Chief Deputy Lee recounted the harrowing moments following the ambush: "The other detectives in the area went to his location and saw his undercover vehicle with multiple gun strikes in it." Due to the severity of his injuries, Esqueda was rushed to the hospital in a patrol vehicle rather than waiting for emergency medical services. Despite these efforts, Esqueda succumbed to his injuries.
Sheriff Ed Gonzalez expressed his grief and determination in a social media post: "He was dedicated to protecting and serving the residents of Harris County. We pray with Deputy Esqueda's family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time. Deputy Esqueda's commitment to duty and his sacrifice will always be remembered."
The Violent Persons Task Force, to which Esqueda belonged, is known for pursuing some of the most dangerous criminals, including child rapists and homicide suspects. The loss of Esqueda has deeply affected the department and the community he served.
The manhunt for Palmer intensified following the shooting, with authorities urging the public to provide any information that could lead to his capture. Sheriff Gonzalez shared a photo of Palmer on social media and identified him as a person of interest in the capital murder of Deputy Esqueda. The Sheriff's Office emphasized that they would not rest until Palmer was apprehended.
On Thursday, authorities confirmed that Palmer had been taken into custody. The arrest brings a measure of relief to a community still reeling from the loss of one of its protectors. Chief Deputy Lee stated, "We have no doubt that the suspect will be in custody in no time," reflecting the department's confidence in their swift action.
As the investigation continues, the Harris County Sheriff's Office is focused on ensuring justice for Deputy Esqueda and his family. The department has called for the community's support and prayers during this difficult time. Sheriff Gonzalez reiterated the department's commitment to bringing the perpetrator to justice and ensuring the safety of the community.
Deputy Esqueda's untimely death serves as a stark reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face daily. His dedication and service to the Harris County community will not be forgotten, and his sacrifice will be honored as the department continues its mission to protect and serve.
