Legal Action Looms for 'Squid Game: The Challenge' as Contestants Allege Injuries
'Squid Game: The Challenge,' the reality show adaptation of Netflix's hit series, is facing potential legal trouble. Two contestants have approached Express Solicitors, a personal injury law firm, alleging they sustained injuries during the show's filming. The firm has sent letters of claim to Studio Lambert, the show's co-producer, signaling the possibility of a lawsuit.
According to a press release from Express Solicitors, the contestants were injured while participating in the "Red Light, Green Light" game, filmed at Cardington Studios in the UK amidst a cold wave. The participants reportedly suffered from conditions like hypothermia and nerve damage. Although Netflix acknowledged that three of the 456 players required medical assistance during the shoot, detailed information about these incidents was not disclosed.
The law firm's CEO, Daniel Slade, commented on the situation, noting the contrast between the contestants' expectations and their experiences. He expressed concern that participants, hoping for an enjoyable experience, ended up enduring substantial physical distress. Slade highlighted the challenges faced by the contestants, who had to remain motionless for extended periods in freezing temperatures, resulting in their injuries.
A representative for 'Squid Game: The Challenge' confirmed that no lawsuit had been officially filed by any contestants as of now. They emphasized the show's commitment to participant welfare, stating, "We take the welfare of our contestants extremely seriously.”
This reality version of the South Korean TV phenomenon, sans the lethal outcomes of the original series, puts players through a series of challenges mirroring those depicted in the show. The grand prize for the winner is set at $4.56 million USD, marking the largest cash prize in Netflix's reality TV history. The unfolding legal situation poses a significant challenge to the show's producers and could cast a shadow over future iterations of the series.
