Okay, let's get all faggoty here with the internet etiquette.
LOL was originally supposed to mean "I just laughed out loud." To use it when you don't actually laugh out loud is a "fake laugh". As in real life, Fake internet laughter is harsh and awkward and makes you seem kind of stupid. To use fake laughter mockingly, as a cheap substitue for a put-down, does not impress.
